Zooomy Side Effects: Why They’re Rare and What to Expect

Worried about side effects from Zooomy? Let’s put your mind at ease!

The good news is that Zooomy has an excellent safety record, and in real-world use, the only side effect we occasionally see is a mild upset tummy when starting.

No scary hidden risks. No long-term complications. Just a small minority of dogs (around 1 in 500) needing a little extra time for their digestive system to adjust.

In this guide, we'll explain exactly why this happens, what to look out for, and what to do if your dog shows signs of digestive upset when starting Zooomy.

Why can Zooomy cause a mild tummy upset?

Hyaluronic acid (the active ingredient in Zooomy) has an excellent safety profile. It’s a naturally occurring molecule found in the joints, skin and connective tissues - and it's widely used in both human and veterinary medicine.

However, a very small number of dogs (around 1 in 500) find it tricky to digest the full amount of hyaluronic acid straight away.

When this happens, the undigested hyaluronic acid sits in the gut and acts a bit like a sponge - attracting water and making the gut contents more liquid.

This can lead to symptoms like:

  • Loose stools or diarrhoea

  • Feeling nauseous (even if they’re not physically sick)

  • Seeming a bit ‘off’ or not quite themselves

We know it can be worrying - but the reaction is usually mild, and quickly reversible.

What to do if your dog gets an upset tummy on Zooomy

First, don't panic. It’s rare but does happen and cases resolve quickly without needing a vet visit or treatment.

Here’s the simple plan we recommend:

  1. Stop giving Zooomy completely for a few days, until your dog’s tummy has fully settled.

  2. Once they’re back to normal, reintroduce Zooomy slowly:

    • Start with half the recommended amount once a day (in the morning).

    • Continue for 5 days if they stay well.

  3. If no tummy upset returns, increase to:

    • Half the recommended amount twice a day (morning and evening).

    • Continue for 5 days.

  4. If still well, increase the morning dose to the full recommended amount, while keeping the evening at a half amount.

    • Continue for 5 days.

  5. Finally, move up to the full recommended amount twice a day.

👉 Important: If at any stage their tummy wobbles again, drop back to the previous dose and give it a few more days before trying to increase.

Some sensitive dogs do even better starting with a quarter of the full amount and building up even more gradually - that’s absolutely fine.

Why not just push through?

We don’t recommend continuing at full dose if your dog is experiencing symptoms. Giving their digestive system time to adjust will help them feel better faster - and ensures they can go on to get the long-term benefits Zooomy is designed to offer.

Zooomy is rapidly cleared from the gut and body, so once you pause giving it, you should see your dog bouncing back within a couple of days.
